Sometimes, just sometimes, Hikaru thought he could hear Sai's voice. A sigh here, a joyful squeal there.
The first time he had heard it, Hikaru had been in the middle of game with Isumi, but not a serious one. He had lied about a forgotten promise to his mother and left. Hikaru couldn't remember if he had resigned the game or run off before Isumi could answer.
He'd looked furiously for Sai, listened to the silence, pleaded, then had gone to a shrine to pray, offering incense.
And tried to hold back tears. Sai was not there.
A month later, he passed by an internet cafe.
"Hika~ru! I want to play!"
He had frozen in the street and then went in. In a burst of hope and joy, he signed onto the old account and waited. Nothing happened. Tentatively, he accepted a game. Maybe, he had thought, if he started a game, Sai would play.
It did not work. Hikaru beat the amateur easily by himself and logged off in despair.
Of course, the brief return of Sai was the only subject in the Go world for weeks, once it was verified that it was the same account. It hurt, for Hikaru to be called into a discussion, by Waya and even Akari. Sai, Sai, Sai, ran the chant. Think he's really back?
Hikaru had never come so close to telling the whole story, but managed to survive the ordeal until it quieted down again.
He was beginning to think he had gone mad, not for believing in Sai (but since he did so fervently, he might be, he conceded one sleepless night), but for still hearing him. Sai living on his heart and Go game was one thing, but the voice? Another thing entirely.
However... Hikaru went on, playing Go and living life. He heard a voice, so what? He'd been possessed by a ghost, too. Maybe, just maybe, more of Sai remained then he thought. After all, he knew nothing about magic, or whatever it was that made Sai possible. He began to talk to himself on the off chance that Sai could hear him too.
He still heard the flashes, and sometimes wonder if he was hearing the past, Sai trailing unseen behind him, his own madness, or the future.
He never decided which one he hoped for.
