Timeline: Very, very vaguely post-series
Summary: Sugoroku looks at Mai, and sees an odd resemblance.
Disclaimer: Not mine

The first time Sugoroku saw Mai, he thought nothing of it.

The second time, he looked again.

He saw past the artificial girl, who claimed money as her one true love. He didn't bother to think about what she wore. He looked beyond the one the sat on the chair arm by Jounochi. He looked beyond the duelist and into the girl herself.

She was confident, and could be kind. She slimed and smirked, and at times seemed disturbingly like Yuugi's former tenant, save but for the power of the shadows.

He had seen the records of her duels, and had seen her duel. She had skill and played with the heart of the cards. She was the best female duelist in the world currently, and in the top ten --if not five-- overall.

She was her own self, strong and fiercely independent.

He stared at her, while around him, Yuugi's party swung. He wondered, briefly, if he was having a heart attack but dismissed the idea.

He did not dismiss the idea that he was going insane.

Scratch that, he knew he was.

"Eh, Yuugi..." Anzu whispered.

"Yeah, Anzu?"

"Your grandpa has been staring at Mai for at least ten minutes..." She hoped Yuugi would get the picture without her having to spell it out.

"Someone must have spiked the punch," Yuugi sighed.

Anzu snorted. In this group, they and the Kaiba brothers were probably the only people who wouldn't.

"Just hope that Jounochi doesn't notice."

Yuugi nodded fervently. "Help me?"

"Of course." But not even Yuugi would be able to help the old man, if he groped her.

Sugoroku looked like he had been repeatedly hit over the head by a two by four and had just been overdosed with painkillers for the injury. That was not his more typical perverted leer.

She signaled Yuugi, but he had already seen the difference as well.

"He's your grandfather," she insisted. "You must know what that look means."

Yuugi shook his head in denial.

They watched as Sugoroku shook of his paralysis, and stumbled back to the refreshments.

After mid-night, while the party was still going strong, the old gamer slipped away. He had dates to check.

***

No one had left the next morning, Sugoroku found. Honda had permission to stay over, and after him,  Anzu had the closest thing resembling a family, but they more often then not gone.

The house was a mess of course, but he wasn't surprised. He had been to more than his own share of wild parties in his youth... and not so youth as much as youthful age.

He frowned.

One of those parties could have easily led to his strange observance the pervious night to being more then just coincidence.

He should probably tell them later. However, he had a feeling that the conversation would be more then a little embarrassing.

What must be done, must be done.

As he swept the kitchen, he began to formulate his explanation.

"Yuugi, have you ever wondered what all I did after your mother married your father about 23 years ago...? Or why you and Mai share so many similar features such as purple eyes and the angular hair kinks?

Perhaps he should just be straight out about it.

"Yuugi, I'd like to introduce you to your aunt."
