A little-known, sadly, book by J.N. Stroyar called The Children's War, which is alternate-history about an English man who has far too many identities, in a world where the three main superpowers are the North American Union, the Soviet Union, and the Third Reich. He's a physicist/mathematician, and his brother is a chemist.

And they remind me, rather frequently, of the Elric brothers.
